肯定文

【意味】　「〜に･･･がある。」
　(例)
There is a book on the desk. 机の上に本がある。
※このときthere は日本語に訳さないので注意。

There is a girl in the park. 公園に一人の女の子がいる。
There are two bikes in front of the building. その建物の前に2台の自転車がある。

物や人が複数のときはare、単数のときはisを使う。
moneyやwaterなど数えられない名詞は単数扱いなのでisをつかう。
　また、場所を表す語はたいてい前置詞をともなう。

例
There are some books in my bag. 私のかばんの中には何冊かの本がある。
There is a library in our town. 私たちの町には図書館が一つある。
There is a lot of water in the lake. その湖にはたくさんの水がある。
There was an old shrine in the village. その村には古い神社が一つあった。

There is(are)の文は場所を焦点にした言い方。
「物や人」がa boy, two books, some studentsのように不特定の場合に使う。
物や人に焦点をあてた言い方のときは the boy, they, Mike, my friendなどが主語になる。
例
The boy is in the park. その少年は公園にいる。
Mike is by the door. マイクはドアのそばにいる。
They are in Kyoto. 彼らは京都にいる。

疑問文

疑問文を作る場合にはbe動詞を文頭にだす。

(例)
There is a tall tree near the station.
→　Is there a tall tree near the station? Yes, there is. / No, there aren't.

例文
Is there a computer on the desk? 机の上にコンピュータがありますか。
Yes, there is. はい、あります。
Are there any children in the room? 部屋に子どもたちはいますか。
No, there aren't. いいえ、いません。
What is there under the table? テーブルの下には何がいますか。
There is a cat. ネコがいます。

否定文

否定文を作るにはbe動詞の後ろにnotをいれる。

(例)
There is a picture on the wall.
→　There isn't a picture on the wall.

例文
There weren't any animals in that forest. あの森には動物が全くいなかった。
There isn't a school in the town. その町には学校がありません。

書き換え

There is(are)とhave

There is(are)の文はhaveをつかってほぼ同じ意味の文を作ることがでる。

(例)
There are seven days in a week.
→ A week has seven days.

anyとno

There is(are)の文に限らず、否定文のanyと肯定文のnoの書き換えもよく使われる。

(例)
There aren't any children in the park.
→ There are no children in the park.
